About Us

Home is where the heart is and our heart is in serving up authentic Malaysian-style claypot fare with a unique twist. At Clay Abode, we strive to preserve the authentic and healthy style of claypot cooking that date back thousands of years, originating from when early men first covered a chicken with mud and stuck it into the embers of a fire, roasting it to a delicious juicy meal. Cooking in claypots creates a perfectly healthy style meal by retaining and cooking the meat in its own natural juices and nutrients. The secret is in the porous clay which can absorb a great deal of water. During the cooking, the walls of the claypot diffuse the heat and release the water into super-heated steam to penetrate and deposit spices and flavors deep within the food. At Clay Abode, our claypot dishes are cooking directly in the claypot itself, from raw ingredients right up to the delicious, wholesome meal that we serve piping hot to your table.

Our dishes are based on secret family recipes that have been perfected over long history and handed down over many generations. But beyond these traditional secret family recipes, we also try to improve further by taking on popular cuisines from other cooking styles or cultures and re-creating them in deliciously creative claypot style servings that are unique to our Clay Abode.

Come enjoy our tasty, wholesome and healthy dishes with friends and family in our cosy space and feel our sense of home.

Great experience

Popped into this rather new restaurant during lunch alone. Have been craving for "Sa Bo Fan" for a while. I got my seat quick and ordered the traditional claypot rice and got an additional order of the Abode Egg that was reccomended by the service staff.

The size of the claypot is great for me, a singleton today. I always have the fear of getting a super serving whenever I order this thing.

I didn't wait too long for my meal.

I really enjoy the rice that isn't too oily. I like the fact that there are no bones in the chicken. The egg was amazing. It look like the normal hard boil egg that we get in any place. The egg white is brown on the outside, looks like it has been cooked with dark soy sauce. When I cut the egg, the yolk is half-cook, love the texture. Reminds me of the egg in a Japanese Ramen shop.

The restaurant is brightly lighted with a traditional touch from tables and chairs used.

During my meal, I accidentally soiled my shirt with some sauce. The waitress saw it and gave me a wet tissue and even helped me to remove the stains. Kudos for the service.

A small establishment with some great food and staff.

I will return when my craving comes again.

Tasty to the crust!

Try out another new food place at Maxwell Chambers with my colleague last week. At first a bit worried after reading previous review here about waiting time. But I remember when I went to Geylang for claypot last time, I waited for more than an hour. My friend then said to me, This is Sai-Po Fan lei.....you think microwave food ah? True also hor. Authentic Sai-Po Fan take time to cook in the claypot ma....

When we first step in, it was busy and packed like hell! So panic already....my colleague wanted to leave. But I really have craving for Sai-Po Fan that day, so wait lor. Surprisingly, the wait is not long at all la. Sure, we have to wait about 10+ mins for someone to finish and leave the table. But as soon as table is empty, it was cleared and ready for us in about 2 mins flat! I think the waitresses are very super efficient already. We ordered immediately after sitting down cos we already look at menu while waiting. Again surprised, the claypot came to us in about 10 - 15 mins. Wah lau, Sai-Po Fan in 10 - 15 mins......that's rate super high in my books la. Had to check to make sure it was authentically cooked in the claypot and not just scoop into the claypot after cooking. But it is lei....got the burnt crust.

I had the Signature Traditional cos it was set lunch for last week, and add egg too. The taste is superb. The lap cheong is crunchy and yummy; and the smell of the salted fish....wah lau, can die man. I agree with others that the egg should be their signature too. So unique and taste so wonderful with the runny yolk centre. I end up scrapping every last bit of the crust...until my colleague had to tell me to stop becos so paiseh! She had the Rendang dish. I tried some and I must say it is interestingly delicious. She agreed it is delicious also. Recommended if you like spicy food. Maybe I'll try this next time.

Value-wise, I think their set-lunch is great value. $9.90 for a (tasty!) claypot meal with side vege and dessert is very good value lor. I rate value very high for this place too.

Ambience is also rate highly for me. The painting wall is so interesting. Whole place was simple but tasteful renovation. Too bad, it was lunch time so no time to really enjoy the ambience. Can imagine how good this place can be for a relaxing evening venue. Next time, I'll try dinner there. Ok la, I am not really arty-farty type but I can appreciate a nice setting when I see one la.

Great Food

Went to this quaint place for lunch. Jammed packed at lunch today. Had to wait a bit for a table but services was very quick and efficient. Made it back in time for my conference call (thank goodness!). Food taste fabulous and especially love the wall painting. Definitely worth trying.

Truly Authentic

Been a long time since I have tasted a truly authentic claypot chicken rice. What's more, this is in a comfortable air-condition setting rather than a sweaty hawker centre environment. Service was excellent. Orders were taken and food served within reasonable time during lunch rush hour. Ample time to enjoy my food and with time to stroll back to my office nearby...all within my 1-hour lunch break! Their Signature Traditional is wonderfully tasty....and the special Clay Abode egg is a must try. My partner had the Special Rendang Chicken with Pandan rice. Not traditional....but boy, that taste excellent. The wonderful handpainted wall really add character to the ambience. Next time, will try it at dinner time when I have more time to enjoy the food and ambience in my own sweet time.

Good Canton Cuisine!

If you are a fan of Claypot Chicken Rice or Cantonese Cuisine in general, I highly recommend you go to Clay Abode. The place is well furnished with a good number of tables and chairs to cater for even the most of crowds. I was throughly impressed with the chicken's marinate which was very very tasty. The food here was very good. You must try the special egg!! Wonderful! There is definitely a wide variety of food which caters to the family. The staff were very attentive and seemed like the restaurant placed much emphasis on service. I was generally very impressed and will bring my friends in the future. Highly Recommended!

Finally, authentic claypot food in great restaurant setting

Ever notice that good claypot places are at hawker centres? Food is good but you suffer in sweat to eat! We recently chanced by a new claypot restaurant next to T-Pagar MRT called Clay Abode. It serves great tasting authentic claypot rice (even with the charcoal burnt crust, etc) but in a real restaurant setting (with air-cond!), perfect for a quiet dinner moment with loved ones. It is not very busy tat night when we were there, which is great. Hope it doesn't get too busy soon and lsoe the relaxing dinning experience for us. Love that unique wall painting. Definitely recommended for its great authentic Asian food with great ambience. On value, I think it's reasonably what u expect for a restaurant but still much cheaper than fine-dining Western/Italian (I am biased as I much prefer Asian food to rich Western/Italian food...yucks). P/s - do try their special egg. Tho not "traditional" to claypot rice but it is rather uniquely prepared and goes very well with the claypot rice.

Truly Authentic

A typical lunch place, specialized in claypot rice preparations. My rice was burned the further I dleved into my claypot, so the second time, I took braised oyster mushrooms with ginger - which took a long time but was very good.

The place is amazingly crowded at lunch time - to 95% with young Chinese females working in the neighborhood.

Service is OK and the prices as well.

CLAY ABODE
